FAQ - Frequently asked questions about power meters

Power meters are the right choice when you need control, monitoring or analysis of electricity consumption and electricity quality in industrial installations.

  • Monitoring energy consumption in machines and control cabinets
  • Energy monitoring in industrial facilities
  • Cost allocation and billing (MID certified meters)
  • Troubleshooting and analysis of power quality, harmonics and imbalance
  • Data collection to PLC, SCADA, BMS or IIoT platforms

Power meters contribute to better decision-making, energy efficiency and operational reliability.

Power meters are not always necessary in all installations.

  • Only simple power supply without the need for follow-up
  • Temporary installations without history or logging requirements
  • Applications where only voltage or current needs to be indicated

In these cases, simpler measuring instruments or monitoring via control systems may be sufficient.

Power meters are installed in electrical cabinets, machines and electrical panels to provide continuous information about energy flows and electricity quality.

Common uses:

  • Energy monitoring in production lines
  • Monitoring of energy costs per machine or zone
  • Remote monitoring via Modbus, Ethernet or IIoT
  • Power quality analysis in case of operational disruptions
  • Basis for energy efficiency measures

Power meters are used to measure and monitor electricity consumption, power and power quality in machines, control cabinets and facilities. They provide data for energy optimization, operational monitoring, troubleshooting and, in some cases, billing or cost allocation.

Panel-mounted power meters are installed in the front of the electrical cabinet and often have a larger display for local reading. DIN-mounted power meters are mounted on a DIN rail in the cabinet and are more compact, making them suitable when space is limited or when multiple measurement points are needed.

MID certification is required when energy measurement is used as a basis for billing or cost allocation, for example between internal departments or charging points. MID certified energy meters comply with the EU Measurement Directive (EN 50470).

It depends on which model is used.

  • Panel-mounted power meters and some DIN-mounted models require an external current transformer (CT).
  • DIN-mounted power meters with built-in CT can measure current directly without external components, simplifying installation.

PQ analysis (Power Quality) involves measuring power quality, such as voltage imbalance, harmonics and interference.
THD (Total Harmonic Distortion) shows how much harmonics are present in the network. High THD values can cause heat, interference and reduced equipment life. Power meters with PQ functions are used for troubleshooting and analysis of such problems.
